‘Graphic recording’ aka ‘live illustration’ - what exactly is it?

Have you ever left a talk or workshop inspired, but struggling to remember the key points later? That’s where graphic recording comes in. It’s a live, visual summary of a discussion—created by an illustrator in real time—using hand-drawn images, keywords, and colour to capture ideas as they unfold.

Instead of static notes or bullet points, you get a dynamic visual map that brings conversations to life. It helps participants stay engaged, see connections more clearly, and retain information far better. Studies show visuals can improve recall by up to 65% (and are particularly helpful for the 15-20% of people who are neurodivergent*) so having a graphic recording means the message sticks long after the event ends.

With its roots in Silicon Valley where it was developed to help with ideas generation and capture, it’s not just drawing, it’s listening deeply, synthesising meaning, and making ideas visible. Whether it’s a conference, strategy session, or community dialogue, graphic recording turns talk into something you can actually see, share, and remember.

*Recent estimates are that 15-20% of the worldwide population is neurodivergent but the rise in recent diagnoses has led some experts to suggest it could be even higher.

Booking and rates

Rates vary according to the job and I have a sliding scale (so I can charge less for charities). A quote can be provided once I have more information about the event.

In-person events can be drawn using pen and large-scale paper or on an iPad (which can be projected, if required, during the event). Online events are drawn on an iPad and shared with the audience using screen-sharing technology.

Full terms and conditions are shared when you enquire. Please message through my contact page and include the event name, a short description, the date and location and whether it’s in person or online. Thank you.
